Primary Care Prescribing Initiatives

The initiative aims to encourage GPs to achieve cost-effective prescribing, helping to obtain value for money from NHS resources in the interests of all patients. Practices are engaged in a programme of initiatives and educational events to implement best practice, involving patients in optimising their use of medicines and achieving value for money, focusing on specific therapeutic areas.  . 

It benefits patients by ensuring that medicines prescribed are based on up-to-date best clinical evidence or guidance.  The scheme can free up resources to improve patient care and treat more patients while assisting the CCG to manage its expenditure within its resources. 

The scheme has been developed with input from GPs and Pharmacists working in primary care.

Antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat to public health.  Prescribing antibiotic courses when in line with local guidelines

Pain Management

Review of patients on Opioids, Pregabalin & Gabapentin, Tricyclic antidepressants.

Eclipse RADAR  -Improved Clinical Safety & reduced admissions

Review of High Risk Drugs using Eclipse Radar risk stratification software 

Supporting Self-Care

National NHSE Conditions for which over the counter items should not routinely be prescribed in primary care resources 

 Cost Containment

Managing medicines cost-effectively is a key part of effective prescribing. This element of the scheme promotes the use of lower cost medicines where there is good evidence to support their use, while promoting good quality prescribing for all disease areas
