The initiative aims to encourage GPs to achieve cost-effective prescribing, helping to obtain value for money from NHS resources in the interests of all patients. Practices are engaged in a programme of initiatives and educational events to implement best practice, involving patients in optimising their use of medicines and achieving value for money, focusing on specific therapeutic areas. .
It benefits patients by ensuring that medicines prescribed are based on up-to-date best clinical evidence or guidance. The scheme can free up resources to improve patient care and treat more patients while assisting the CCG to manage its expenditure within its resources.
The scheme has been developed with input from GPs and Pharmacists working in primary care.
