Joint Continence & Catheter Care Formulary

Joint Continence & Catheter Care Formulary
  • Prescription Management of Stoma and Incontinence Products - [459 KB] [pdf / 459KB] This guidance aims to support primary care in the prescription management process around cost effective and rational prescribing for continence and stoma products. The guidance is intended for all health care professionals and third party organisations involved in the prescribing, ordering and review of stoma and incontinence products within the Lancashire Health Economy.

Introduction

The Pennine Lancashire Formulary for adults has been devised by a panel of practitioners who have specialist knowledge and expertise in urology, bladder and bowel care.
This reflects the North West Urology Framework, supported by Shared Business Services NHS. It aims to provide a clinically and cost effective choice of products to manage a range of urology, bladder and bowel care needs for adults.
It is expected that the vast majority of products will be selected from this Formulary. Products listed as ‘specialist initiation only’ should be prescribed ONLY following assessment by, or discussion with Urology, Urogynaecology, or Bladder and Bowel Service
Clinicians. If any product is required which is not listed, the rationale for this should be documented in the patient record.

When ordering via the East Lancashire Appliance Prescription Service the exception should be documented on the Continence Prescription Request Form.

Please note: For children who are to be prescribed catheter, continence and stoma products, please refer to the guidance
provided by the patients’ specialist practitioner.

Local Policies and Procedures should be adhered to. Appropriate training by practitioners must be undertaken and competencies
maintained in relation to the selection, use and prescribing of items listed in this formulary.
